St Stephen’s boasts excellent “green” credentials operating a very successful recycling scheme for both retailers and shoppers.
During 2009, 60% of waste generated at St Stephen’s was directed away from landfill sites and recycled, this shows a 10% increase on the previous year and the team are committed to increasing this even more aiming for 70% by the end of 2010 and ultimately 0% to landfill over the coming years.
The rainwater harvesting system provides water for flushing of toilets and The Green Team at St Stephen’s have recently implemented a number of new energy saving initiatives to reduce consumption of water and electricity and are continually striving to look for more viable energy saving devices: -
- Water saving devices installed in toilets producing a saving of over 235 cubic metres of water per year.
- Saving of 26% on electricity usage during 2009 from 2008
- Energy saving light-bulbs installed in designated areas throughout the Centre with controlled lighting system in operation.
Work continues on biodiversity and St Stephen’s are actively working with external partners on a Green Travel Plan for staff and customers promoting the benefits of using public transport. The close proximity to the Transport Interchange means that already over half of St Stephen’s customers use “green” methods of transport and plans are in place to continue to improve on this figure.
